Halloween in Quinta da Regaleira

The end of October brings about its share of enthusiasm: Halloween, the ancient feast of the dead made into a popular and merry modern festivity and often thrill to kids. Portugal is a country that has celebrated the religious feast of All Saints for centuries, but Halloween is a more recent concept. Nevertheless, kids and the younger generation have come to celebrate it with a lot of enthusiasm. So here is the suggestion we have: Halloween in Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal!

Quinta da Regaleira is a romantic/ gothic castle in the beautiful town of Sintra, near Lisbon. This 19th-century castle is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and all the locals will tell you that this is a site never to miss. If you’ve been to Sintra and not seen Quinta, then you really must come back! – they all say.

Quinta da Regaleira is an awesome place to spend Halloween. Just rent a car in Lisbon and drive to Sintra – with some luck, the weather will still be nice and warm there. Any local can direct you to the amazing castle.

So why would this castle be such a good idea during the feast of Halloween? Firstly, because it has an amazing history. And an old one, because in fact the place had a lot of owners before it was bought by Carvalho Monteiro in 1892. Monteiro was a visionary who, with the help of Italian architect Luigi Manini and – some say – some of the most prominent secret societies in the world, created a true romantic fortress with extensive gardens, tunnels and enigmatic new buildings that in the eyes of many have correspondence with alchemy, freemasonry and with societies like the Rosicrucians and the Knights Templar.

Exaggerations? Myths? Maybe, but it’s still well worth traveling there to assess for yourself!
