The city is known for being the port of call for a plethora of cruise ships as well as its duty-free shopping opportunities as well as other more traditional types of attractions.

While you may not necessarily need a car to get around to seeing the city’s sights, as most of them are within walking distance of the city center, you might want to have the option of a rental car if you want to visit farther away sights such as the Savanna Green or the Malibu Rum Factory.

Once in the city you will surely want to visit the Barbados Museum which oddly enough is housed in the former British Military Prison but regardless of this the museum is a great place where you can get introduced to the island’s history. The museum exhibits start off from the time of the coral island’s formation, then they go into the history of the native people of the island after which the more rich period of the European colonization which brought African slaves with it. The emancipation of the slaves and the independence from the British is of course also talked about as well as some more recent history.

Another attraction that you will want to visit is the Careenage, this used to be a port for ships but it now houses boutiques, bars and restaurants all of which are set in refurbished warehouses. Once you get there you will notice that this was a great spot for a port as it is very well protected from the open sea and nowadays you can walk along its length to enjoy the architecture of the period buildings on one side and fishing and pleasure boats on the other and why not you can stop for a bit of rum at one of its cafes.
