The city has a great Mining Museum, the largest in the country actually and the coal seams of the old Anselm Mine surface into the Landek National Nature Reserve which is an incredible mix of geology, history and natural sciences for anyone interested.
The Vitkovice Area used to be an industrial area in the 19th century but it managed to maintain its look and feel so well that in 2002 it was declared a site of National Cultural Heritage. This is basically a time capsule on a large scale where you can see the entire technological chain of coal, from the mine to the coke plant and then off to the iron and steel production. In 2008 this became an European Cultural Heritage site and as such it is in the process of undergoing some extensive reconstruction.
Stepping away a bit from the mining related history of the city, there is the Silesian Ostrava Castle which was built in the second half of the 13th century. This castle has an interesting history, being rebuilt twice, once after it burnt down and the second time after sinking sixteen meters into the ground due to the extensive mining activities that took place in the city.
One of the city’s most popular tourist attractions is the Viewing Tower which allows you to see the entire city on a clear day as well as the nearby mountains. The tower is almost 86 meters tall and a total of 298 meter above sea level.
