Then there’s the ceiling which is one single piece huge fresco representing the lifework of the famed artist Mattia Preti.
The Palace of the Grand Masters is another building that you’ll want to visit, it now acts as the President’s Office as well as the Maltese Parliament, it features impressive staterooms and a very large armory which houses weapons and armor from many eras during the Medieval Ages.
The city and its surroundings are littered with signs of its tumultuous past like the Fort St. Elmo for instance which was built after a raid in 1551 only to take part in the Great Siege of 1565, or the St. James Cavalier fortress which was part of a very intricate system of defensive buildings meant to protect the city.
