Edinburgh is located pretty up North, so this means that for about half of the year the days are rather long while for the rest they are rather short. The ideal time period to visit, weather wise would be sometime between May and September but you always have to keep in mind that the weather can change rather quickly from sunshine to rain, so it would be advisable to bring with you a sturdy umbrella or a raincoat, or preferably both.
You will most probably enter Edinburgh by plane, touching down at Edinburgh Airport which is located about ten miles west of the city. While driving into Edinburgh isn't difficult, driving through it might pose a bit of a challenge as the Old Town has a medieval layout with many one way streets and the fact that parking is quite the problem. There are several multi-story car parks in the city center though however it might be faster and indeed cheaper to use the Park and Ride systems located at the city's entrances. These will basically allow you to park your car in a safe spot while also provide you with the means of going into the city center via public transport while avoiding the stress of doing so in your own vehicle.
