A few things about the main Hawaiian islands

Hawaii, Oaku Island, Hanauma Bay

The Hawaii Islands have been the paradise vacation spot for many Americans for the past couple of decades, located very close to the center of the north Pacific Ocean, the State of Hawaii, while part of the United States of America, the islands themselves are part of the region known as Polynesia, a place filled with interesting culture, peoples and traditions.

Those who are planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands but don’t know where to start might want to read our article to get a better general idea of what they can expect from the various islands and locations there. Don’t get the wrong idea, wherever you will go in Hawaii you’ll have a great time, because all of the islands are just fantastic, but each one has its unique characteristics and flavor to offer its visitors and you should be aware of them when planning your trip.

Oahu – the capital island

This place is known for exuding a lot of energy, having great beaches, great food and quite a few museums. Oahu is an ideal destination for those interested in taking in the multiculturalism of Hawaii, the island is a place where East and West meet in a unique manner. While the island may be small, Honolulu is big, and everyone seems to rub elbows, whether you’re on the beach or in the bus, however nobody gets annoyed by it.

If the city’s many art galleries, museums and monuments don’t do it for you, make sure you take in the many eating opportunities which range from Japanese gastropubs to traditional island-style food trucks, and everything in between and beyond, Oahu has it.

Hawaii – The Big Island

Being home to the most active volcano on Earth makes for an interesting perspective as far as hiking goes because the tectonic activity makes for basically a dreamscape for them, however the place isn’t as dangerous as you may think and visiting lava flows, both new and ancient can prove to be a truly interesting experience.

This might be your best choice of taking in the Hawaiian culture that you think of when you think of Hawaii, you can create a lei, see hula dancers and watch how fish are caught in the traditional way.

Maui

Maui probably has a beach for every mood in the book, whether you’re a kite-boarder who needs wind-whipped beaches or someone who enjoys snorkelling in calm coves, all of them can be found on the island of Maui.

It’s also a great place for hikers because of their massive ridge-tops, wonderful waterfalls, dense bamboo forests and of course a volcanic national park.

After all that activity you can dig into some wonderful grass-fed beef and organically grown veggies because Maui’s chef-driven restaurants have only the freshest ingredients to work with.

There are a couple more islands that we could talk about but we’re saving those for a future article.
