Two weeks before the Shangai Auto Show, the BMW X4 concept was revealed to show a blend of the BMW X and Coupe model.

This concept is pretty much identical to the version that will see production alongside the BMW X3, in a move that is quite similar to the position of the BMW X6 in comparison to the X5.

The X4 concept is set to be launched worldwide early next year, early of arriving locally in about 12 months time.

Even though the BMW X4 concept is expected to share the current X3’s range of engines, the concept is 36mm shorter, 34mmwider and 53mm lower than its future sibling however, it does ride on an identical 2810mm wheelbase.

The concept features a long bonnet with short overhangs and a set back passenger cell, alongside LED headlights, a restyled grille with large side air intakes and prominent horizontal chrome bars, 21-inch light allow wheels and dual chrome exhaust outlets.

The model features a strong character line that runs from the front quarter of the X4 to just inside the rear doors, before it’s overtaken by a still-robust line that accentuates the rear guard in flows into the LED tail-lights. The wheel arches are clad in black plastic and front and rear underbody protections were also added.

According to BMW, ever since the first BMW X model was launched in 1999 – the BMW X5 – SUV sales which are made up of the X1, X3, X5 and X6, have grown to such an extent that today, one in four new BMW cars sold is in fact an X model. It would appear that BMW explores the possibility of an X2 SUV, which will be based on the compact BMW X1.

The BMW Concept X4 will be shown alongside the BMW 3 Series Grand Turismo, BMW Concept Active Tourer and BMW M6 Gran Coupe when the doors of the Shanghai Auto Show open on April 20.
