December Holiday Destinations – The Fiji Islands

Fiji Islands

Fiji Islands

Another popular destination that we have to talk about when discussing potential winter holiday retreats is the Fiji Islands. It is somewhat unfortunate that most people visit this tropical paradise during the summer when they could get much more out of their experience by visiting it during the winter, since it will still be warm and sunny there in December.

The Fiji Islands are something of a melting pot of Pacific and Asian cultures which has given birth to a generally laid back and easy-going atmosphere which makes it great for a holiday there.

Considering the fact that Fiji is an extremely popular tourist destination, this has meant that its tourist related infrastructure is extremely well developed and offers pretty much anything and everything that one might be looking for in a tropical island setting: scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, sailing, fishing, and many more other activities. Add to these the great food, great weather and great people and the decision whether or not to go to Fiji this winter shouldn’t be that hard to make.

Let’s talk a bit about what you might expect to see while on such a trip to Fiji.

First of all you should understand that Fiji isn’t just one place, it is actually an archipelago made up of over three hundred islands that you can visit with Viti Levu and Vanua Levu being the largest of them as well as the most popular ones. A good place to start is the capital Suva and this works to your advantage of course because all planes and boats land here.

Suva features some of the country’s best maintained colonial-era buildings and it is very interesting to see the multiracial culture of the city being reflected in its architecture with temples, mosques and churches side by side being one of the best examples of this diversity, for instance the Roman Catholic Cathedral would be hard to miss.

Nadi is probably the country’s most visited spot, located on the island of Viti Levu, it features beautiful mountain scenery, white beaches and many resorts and accommodation centres.

For those of you who are interested in the more folk traditions of the place then Sigatoka is the place for you, as this town is well knows for its pottery on the one hand and sand dunes on the other, so definitely an interesting place to visit.

These are just a couple of the many things that you can see and do while on your Fiji holiday, so don’t hesitate to consider this archipelago as a warm spot for your winter holiday.
