The Detroit Electric SP:01 sports car, the new all-electric vehicle claimed to be the fastest pure-electric production car in the world, has been officially unveiled in Detroit.

The two-seater, rear-wheel-drive, Detroit Electric SP:01 will be limited to just 999 examples and the company states that it can reach zero to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 249km/h, both of which while producing no emissions whatsoever.

The Detroit Electric SP:01  features carbonfibre bodywork placed on a lightweight aluminium platform and is powered by a compact and mid-mounted 150kW/225Nm electric motor coupled with a 37kWh battery pack. These features blend together to deliver a range of around 305km between charges. In order for the battery pack to be fully charged, the SP:01 will also employ regenerative braking technology which will recover kinetic energy from braking to charge the battery.

The vehicle features a performance-tuned suspension, steering and braking systems, and weighing in at 1068kg, the Detroit Electric SP:01 is expected to become a class-leader in regards to performance, ride and handling.

The Detroit Electric vehicle is meant to offer an exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced driving experience, and according to chairman and group CEO, Albert Lam, it is meant to allow the company to show off their ability to build an innovative product capable of displaying great performance coupled with very strong green credentials.

The vehicle’s exterior features a low-slung and muscular stance with a removable rood, very reminiscent of the Lotus Elise, while the interior benefits from the use of carbonfibre and leather.

The new vehicle will be built at Detroit Electric’s new production facility in Michigan and it is due to go on sale in certain markets in August. The model will later be joined by a new “family of all-electric production cars” that will include two other high-performance models.
