Ford Fiesta 2014 gets EcoBoosted

We’ve talked a lot about Ford’s gem of a three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine on this blog, it’s definitely worth all the attention, or at least we think so, so today we’ll talk about it again.

It has been confirmed by Ford that the upper mentioned engine will in fact arrive next year in the 2014 Ford Fiesta. The unit in the 2014 Fiesta is expected to reach an output of around 123 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Ford did make a note of the fact that the engine has a higher specific output than any other engine in its stable.

Ford continued to say that the new Fiesta will also benefit from several other technologies which will help the three-cylinder engine get more than 40 mpg.

One of these technologies is an advanced cooling system that will accurately manage the engine temperature at different points in the entire system. Then there’s the variable-speed oil pump as well as the offset crankshaft meant to reduce noise and vibration which combined with the external balancing will keep the ride pretty smooth.

The EcoBoost engine also uses a scavenging effect which flushes residual gases from the cylinder, thus increasing the mass of the following charge and cooling gas to reduce knock. These will also help speed up turbo spooling which will also lead to better low-end torque.

Ford’s global director of engine engineering, Bob Fascetti has said that the EcoBoost is a major pillar of Ford’s fuel-efficiency strategy going forward. And apparently next year, Ford will be offering eight vehicles in total that will get more than 40mpg.

More details are expected to be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, so stay tuned.
