Ford Mondeo getting a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost

Ford have recently announced that a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine will be joining their efficiency-focused turbocharged engine line-up, and the new Ford Mondeo will be the first to benefit from this new powerplant.
This will be the fifth EcoBoost engine from Ford and will feature direct fuel injection as well as a variable valve timing technology and a design that – at least according to the manufacturer – it promises to make the EcoBoost engines to be even more fuel efficient, powerful and refined.
There are several changes made to the new engine, first of all it’s an all new aluminium-block, twin-cam which includes an integrated exhaust manifold – granted this was introduced on the 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost – but it also incorporates a new computer-controlled clutch for the engine’s belt-drive water pump meant to further improve efficiency by reducing warming-up time.
Again according to Ford, their new 1.5-litre engine is expected to deliver similar power and torque stats to the current 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, while featuring better fuel economy and lower emissions. The future Ford Kuga, the 1.6-litre EcoBoost delivers 110kW, 240Nm, 6.7 litres per 100km and 157 grams of CO2 per kilometer when in its front-wheel-drive mode and 134kW, 7.7L/100km and 179g/km when in all-wheel drive.
Production of their new four-cylinder is planned to start later this month at Ford’s Craiova facility in Romania, with additional manufacturing locations to be announced later. According to Ford, they expect that by the end of 2013, six plants across Europe, Asia and North America will be manufacturing EcoBoost engines.
The car maker has said that more than 600,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles have been sold around the globe since the range was originally launched in 2009 with the 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost and that by the end of 2012, nearly eighty percent of Ford’s global nameplates will be available with their EcoBoost technology.
