Hidden tourist gems of Canada

Saying that Canada is big could be considered something of an understatement, it is in fact the second largest country in the world and the largest in North America. This is due to its world renowned harsh but beautiful landscape, combined with its position on the globe, this makes large parts of Canada not exactly ideal for human life for long periods of the year.

Canada is truly a land of vastness, huge distances, very rich cultural and natural beauty and while we’ve talked here a while back about well known places to visit such as the Banff National Park, today we’ll focus on some of the lesser known gems that Canada has in store for its visitors.

Prince Edward County for instance is a lesser known region of southeastern Ontario. This is a great place to visit if you’re a foodie because many top chefs have been drawn to the area because of its abundance of local produce as well as wineries, breweries and cheese shops.

While you may have surely heard of Nova Scotia in general, Cape Breton is an island right at the tip of the region. The island is well known for its distinct Celtic identity and heritage, which visitors can experience through traditional food and music as well as the charm of the inhabitants. Those who love a nice drive will love Cape Breton as it is home to the Cabot Trail, one of the planet’s most beautiful drives.

The Magdalen Islands or Iles de la Madelaine, can be found in maritime Quebec, right in the middle of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. What makes these islands stand apart from others is the stunning environments which are marked by sand dunes, which are interspersed with mounds and valleys. Also the red sandstone cliffs that have been carved by the wind and water throughout the centuries only add to the richness of the panorama.

Staying in the region of Quebec, you can find Charlevoix. This is a wonderful gulf-side region made up of several smaller towns such as Baie-Saint-Paul, Saint-Simeon and Baie-Sainte-Catherine. This is where skiers can find ‘Le Massif’, one of the best places for the activity as well as others such as hiking and cycling.
