MG is looking for some record sales in 2013

According to official industry data, the now wholly Chinese-owned MG, is the fastest-growing British brand in the UK. The figures releases by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have revealed MG to have grown by 117 percent in 2012, thanks in large part to the opening of eight new dealerships.

MG has enjoyed its best sales year in the UK since way back in 2006, selling more cars than 2010 and 2011 combined.

The success was also mirrored in China where the parent company of MG, SAIC Motor, sold over two hundred thousand units across its MG and – China-only – Roewe brands – an increase of 23 percent over last year – thus representing the biggest growth within the SAIC group’s automotive divisions.

The brand has grown worldwide as well, thanks to MG gaining ground faster than at any other time in its 89-year history. In China there are now 190 MG dealers and modern MG models are now being sold in more than forty countries across the world.

The UK MG models are engineered and assembled at SAIC Motor’s European Design and Technical Centre in Birmingham.

We should note that the parent company isn’t resting on any laurels, they’re investing continuously in design and technology, with a $2.25 million expansion plan for the Design Centre – which is already in progress – and a $.22 million engine testing facility which recently opened in Longbridge, Birmingham.

The brand is looking north for 2013, after the launch of the DTi-Tech diesel versions of the MG6 GT and the MG6 Magnette models, as well as the future launching of a Fiesta-sized model, the MG3.

2013 will also be the second year in which MG will compete in the British Touring car Championship. In 2012, MG driver Jason Plato managed to take third place in the drivers’ championship in what was supposed to be something of a learning year for the team.
