Munich Travel Tips

Munich - Marienplatz

When talking about visiting Germany, most people think about its capital, Berlin, and all the historic things related to it, as well as its cultural and economic importance. However in today’s article we’ll be talking about a different large German city, of similar importance: Munich.

The city was first mentioned in a historical document in 1158 and in 1175 it received city status which meant that fortifications were built. Nowadays, Munich is the capital of Bavaria and is home to a population of about 1.3 million inhabitants, making it the country’s third-largest city.

Now even when considering the fact that the city is located in Southern Bavaria, it’s interesting to note that the people are not your typical Bavarian and the difference can be heard from the start because of the dialect that they use, a dialect that is quite different from the overall Bavarian dialect.

The city is very prosperous and rather wealthy and at the same time it is very clean and safe, however this also makes it rather expensive as well so keeping a track of your expenses should be on your mind when you’re going there.

As far as thing to see and do go, the city won’t let you down, the Marienplatz is a place that calls out to visitors with its promises of street entertainers, outdoor cafes and Gothic Neues Rathaus.

In a somewhat similar vein, and as far as events go, there’s the Auer Dult, which is an old market that takes place three times a year. During this time there are many stalls where you can find things like old books, cooking equipment, rare things, antiques and much more.

Of course when you talk about Munich and events one cannot avoid talking about Oktoberfest which is arguably one of the most important festivals in the country, it is surely one of the most important ones in Bavaria, but we won’t spend too much time talking about today because October is quite a long ways off, and we’ll dedicated an article to the event closer to that time.

For those who are fan of European Medieval castles, Munich has a couple of great ones to offer, for instance the Residenz which is located right in the center of the city because it used to be the city castle and the residence of Bavarian dukes, electors and kings.

Obviously this is just a small test and idea of what Munich has to offer, rest assured that the city itself will keep you occupied for the duration of your trip there without any problems.
