The Ford Mustang is going to celebrate its 50th birthday in some serious style. The company plans to to recreate a feat first achieved almost half a century ago, they plan to place a Mustang on top of the Empire State Building.

The 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible will be displayed on the observation deck of the very famous New York attraction next month, harkening back to how the prototype of the original convertible was first presented in 1965.

Since there are no portable cranes capable of reaching the 86th floor of the 443-metre tower, the car will have to be partially disassembled, loaded into the building’s elevators and then put back together at the top – just as it happened with the prototype 49 years ago.

The present-day Ford team will be using computer engineering data to make very precise cuts in the 2015 Mustang convertible – the models is almost 18cm longer and 10cm wider than its ancestor – to be able for the pieces to fit inside the elevator.

According to the company, its technicians will have less than six hours to reassemble the parts into a complete vehicle for the display at the top of the Manhattan icon.

The new Mustang Convertible will be displayed on the observation deck of the Empire State Building on April 16 and 17, coinciding with Ford’s global celebration of the 50th anniversary of the debut of the original Mustang at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.

Ford is also planning to launch a 50th Anniversary Edition of the Mustang with very distinctive styling cues inspired by fastbacks of the past.

The new-gen Ford Mustang convertible made its international debut in Sydney in December.
