New dual carbon battery to change battery-powered landscape

The Japanese company called Power Japan Plus has created a new dual carbon battery with which it hopes to revolutionize the electric car, as well as other things.

Their new Ryden dual carbon battery is made up of a cathode and anode made of carbon – hence the dual carbon name – and an electrolyte that includes lithium. Even though lithium is a highly reactive element, the company claims that Ryden is the safest battery yet.

While in use, the dual carbon battery doesn’t fluctuate in temperature vey much which in turn means that it isn’t susceptible to thermal runaway like lithium-ion batteries are. This also means that the Ryden doesn’t require all the heavy and complet cooling systems used currently for larger battery packs, such as in electrified cars.

Power Japan Plus claims that the Ryden could easily give an electric car a range of 480km between charges. The company also claims that their dual carbon battery can be recharged a whopping 20 times faster than a current-gen lithium-ion counterpart and the batteries can function for at least 3000 charging cycles, which again is a much larger number than the 500 to 1000 currently offered by lithium-ion technology.

The Ryden battery is also free of rare earth metals – such as those used in nickel-metal hydride batteries – which makes the batteris 100 percent recyclable or at least this is what the company claims. In order to make its effect on the environment even lighter, the company is working on a new material they plan to process from organically grown cotton, as opposed to using carbon from mining and extraction.

Considering the fact that most of the battery’s components will be made of carbon – the most abundant material on Earth – this should make the battery incredibly cost effective even though they haven’ yet went on the record about the pricing.

It’s interesting to see where this new battery technology will lead development of battery powered things.
