Next Generation Mitsubishi Evolution to be smaller

It appears that the next generation of vehicles to carry the Mitsubishi Evolution nameplate will be smaller and use the company’s plugin hybrid system in order to see the production line.

According to Osamu Masuko – Mitsubishi Motors President – the brand would like to create this next generation of sports cars which also needs to meet both customer expectations and its company’s policy on sustainability and new powertrain technologies.

He continued to say that the sports car segment is going down in sales all across the globe so this means that profit will be difficult to get in this segment. So the company is concentrating on developing the new technology so as to ensure profits.

This news means that the next-generation Lancer Evolution and any Ralliart variants were put on hold to focus on SUVs, Plugin hybrids – PHEVs – and electric vehicles – EVs. Even so, Masuko says that the advancements the company is making in the field is hoped to apply to the pinnacle of motor sport.

This is due to the fact that Mitsubishi is planning to participate in any and all EV Formula One and EV Rally contests that might take place in the future.

Even though that’s not even in the works yet, Mitsubishi is hoping to apply their PHEZV technology to the next-gen of the company’s sports cars, and quite likely a PHEV Mitsubishi Evolution will exist.

Combining the new powertrains and already existing rally-bred technology, with the smaller or different size will mean a true ‘evolution’ for the future product.

But this will not happen unless it meets customer demands and also lives up to the Evolution name, because there are quite a lot of fans, and in order to meet the expectation of these people the company has to bring in new technology.

It is yet unknown if Mitsubishi will be applying the Evolution name to a different body in order to continue the nameplate or if they’re going to wait until a next-generation Lancer replacement.
