Range Rover to use new Jaguar SUV

The Range Rover ‘Grand Evoque’ – a long-rumored name – is expected to be based around Jaguar’s all-new lightweight vehicle platform, which might just underpin its first-ever SUV.

According to a report, the new Range Rover Evoque variant will be build aon the same aluminium platform which will be used in four future compact Jaguar models, including an SUV inspired by the C-X17 concept which was unveiled last month’s Frankfurt motor show.

The Range Rover Grand Evoque has been rumoured to be on the planning table since 2011 and the launch was speculated to be sometime in 2016, and it is meant to bridge the gap between the current 4455mm-long Evoque and 4850mm-long Range Rover Sport.

According to global bran director John Edwards, said in September that he was confident that the new architecture would be suitable for Land Rover and Range Rover products so as to not jeopardize their renowned off-road reputation.

Land Rover’s director of programs, Murray Dietsch, has revealed that the platform has cross-brand plausibility. He continued to say that a lot of the technologies that are introduced can be used across both brands, but he can neither confirm nor deny that fact.

From an engineering perspective the Jaguar Land Rover combo has become sort of one business now, and whatever it is that they’re developing, they’re developing with several brands in mind.

Using this new scalable architecture should also reduce the overall weight and improve performance and economy. There is also future potential of introducing hybrid powertrains, as they’ve done in the Range Rover Hybrid and Evoque_e research concepts.

It was initially speculated that the vehicle will be built on a stretched version of the Standard Evoque’s LR-MS platform, the extended model was thought to be around 300mm longer thus increasing cabin space, especially for rear-seat passengers. The addition of third-row seating has also been suggested as something to consider in future designs.
