What is generally seen as being the first South Korean supercar, de Macross Epique GT1 has recently made its European debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The 845-hp, mid-engine, carbon tub and alloy-bodied supercar is the dream-come-true of a Korean oil magnate who is looking into making his own car and his own company, investing quite a decent chunk of his fortune into making it happen.

The supercar has been engineered in Toronto by Multimatic, the Epic is powered by a supercharged 5.4-liter Ford V8 which has been tuned by Roush and rated at 725 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mounted in the middle of the car and is connected to a Ricardo Transaxle which is supported by an alloy rear subframe.

The front suspensions use dampers from DSSV, a Formula One company whose hardware is said to be used by the Red Bull team. The suspension is itself supported by a separate front alloy subframe, with its own cast suspension towers.

The supercar definitely has a pedigree to require that moniker, but its 0-to-62-mph time of 3.1 seconds is more of a claim than an actual well-documented fact, as is its top speed of 230 mph.

There are almost no production plans to speak of, however it is said that U.S. And Middle Eastern buyers might be able to order it now with a six-month waiting period till delivery. The kicker is that it will cost somewhere around $1.5 million, and that doesn’t include taxes.

Now that may seem an incredibly large sum of money, and for the average consumer it sure is, however supercars are aimed at a completely different market, there are several places in the Middle East for instance where Bugatti Veyrons are quite commonplace and the Epique has been generating interest there as an alternative – or so the young company says. This might actually be true considering that the Epique was first unveiled at the Dubai Motor Show.

The company is however working on getting engineering approvals for the U.S. And European markets as well.
