The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf has recently been unveiled in Berlin. In a nut-shell the new model sports a very sharp appearance, a high-quality interior, decreased gasoline and diesel consumption as well as class-leading safety features.
According to the VW chairman the current model will actually be significantly lighter than the previous generation, even though the car itself will be slightly larger and will feature more advanced features as standard equipment.
The new model will be available in Europe starting in November and it is expected to deliver 62 mpg combined city/highway fuel economy with the 105-hp, 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine.
The Golf has been steadily and slightly increasing in size with each iteration. This means that the overall footprint of the car is larger which in turn means that the new model will hug the road with much more confidence than its predecessor. This also means that the interior will increase proportionally.
When it comes to the engine options that the new model will come with, gasoline and diesel will be available on a wide range of four-cylinder, transversely mounted engines. All of the powertrains however will now come with automatic stop/start and brake-energy recuperation systems as standard. Thanks to various engineering refinements and newer technologies, the new Golf will see a reduction in CO2 emissions by up to twenty-three percent – but this is according to the carmaker and only refers to the standard models using front-wheel drive.
In Europe the range of engines will include two turbocharged gasoline engines from the EA211 family: one will be a 1.2-liter producing 85hp and the other a 1.4-liter and 138hp – the second one comes with a cylinder shut-down system that will actually shut-down the middle two cylinders at low-speeds between 1,400 and 4,000 rpm.
In the diesel area, the Golf will come with a 1.6-liter engine from the EA827 family, developing 103 hp and the EA288 diesel engine, a 2.0-liter engine which features a seriously modified exhaust system which will develop 148hp.
