Top skiing destinations from around the world

Considering that the winter season is well underway in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s about time we talk a bit about travel destinations where one can engage in various winter related activities. Be it skiing, snowboarding, sledding or hiking, there are a lot of destination choices out there, and during the next couple of days we’ll be talking about a couple of them, starting off with a quick rundown of what most consider to be among the best.

Aspen – Colorado, United States of America

Aspen is well known in the States for being a ski resort frequented by the rich and famous, and that is a very true-to-life reputation, the resort features high life culture, extraordinary slopes for intermediate and advanced skiers, Aspen is a lap of luxury. Chamonix – Mont Blanc, France

This European resort was actually the set for the first Winter Olympics and it definitely counts itself amongst the most famous ski destinations in the world, especially amongst Western Europeans. Chamonix is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, and surrounded by the Alps. It has something of a reputation for being a party town but it also offers some very fine skiing opportunities, featuring a vertical drop of over 9200 feet as well as the world’s third longest run, the 14 mile Vallee Blanche.

Whistler Blackcomb – British Columbia, Canada

Whistler Blackcomb – For this destination we’re headed back to North America, being considered by many to be one of the best skiing destinations on the continent, this resort features the biggest vertical drop in the Rockies and features a good mix of beginner and intermediate runs. The ‘village’ itself is a great winter destinations regardless of whether or not you’re planning to ski there, it offers some very fine cuisine options, featuring over a hundred restaurants and a plethora of international shops.

Zermatt – Switzerland

Zermatt is a very popular destination for mountaineers of all types, and since it is located in the Alps is has high levels of snow all throughout the year. The place features a great mix of runs and features the second larges vertical drop that is served by a lift in the world. The village itself is very quaint and quiet.

Kitzbuhel – Austria

Some consider Kitzbuhel to be the best ski resort in Austria, thanks to its 158 kilometers of pistes which cover all levels of skiing ability. The resort has the numbers to back this reputation, besides the huge length of its pistes, Kitzbuhel has been around for over seven centuries which adds a certain amount of history-related charm and beauty to the place. It has been called ‘the pearl of the Alps’ because of its central location, being a great place to explore the Austrian Alps, if you’re planning on going to Austria to ski, then this should be on top of your list.
