Toyota Corolla sedan details
The details of the European-spec Toyota Corolla sedan have been revealed, thus previewing a larger and more spacious small car meant to appear in local showrooms in 2014.
Being strongly influenced by the style of the Corolla Furia concept – initially revealed at this year’s Detroit auto show – this new 11th-generation Corolla sedan is 80mm longer, 15mm wider and 5mm lower than its predecessor and 345mm longer than the hatch. The front end of the European version differs from the one on the North American Corolla.
The upper grille is sharp and chrome-plated featuring horizontal bars and they join a lower central air intake and fog lights as the angular headlights feature LED daytime running lights.
As far as the rear of the model, the wide tail-lights are connected by a chrome strip just above the number place recess.
The new shape helps to improve the Corolla’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions through a reduction of its drag coefficient, but the new model also has improved panel gaps and shut lines meant to help with that goal as well.
The old continent will be seeing four petrol engine options including a 73kW/128Nm 1.3-litre, a 90kW/154Nm 1.6-litre, a 97kW/160Nm 1.6-litre Valvematic and a 103kW/173Nm 1.8-litre. The latter version will come exclusively with an automatic continuously variable transmission – CVT – while the others will be coming standard with a six-speed manual transmission with automatic as an option.
For the diesel enthusiasts out there, a 66kW/205Nm 1.4-litre turbo-diesel with a manual transmissions as well as stop-start technology will also be offered, eating up about 3.8L/100km, but the sedan will not feature a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid unit.
As far as the interior is concerned, it is highlighted by a 6.1-inch touchscreen multimedia interface which incorporates pretty much every piece of standard multimedia fare that you’d expect as well as keyless start and park assist.
