Volkswagen Golf is the 2013 World Car of the Year
It appears that the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf has been named the World Car of the Year for 2013 thus marking the brand’s second consecutive such award.
The initial entry contained forty-two cars, and the Golf edged out massive rivals like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman as well as the combined entry of the Toyota 86/GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S, to take the most votes and win.
Last year’s Volkswagen Up! win as well as the past wins of the Volkswagen Polo and Golf VI, back in 2010 and 2009, have lead to Volkswagen’s chairman of the board of management to say that this latest award only solidifies the Golf in a class of its own all around the globe.
And this is just one of the upward trend of the Golf, which according to the chairman will soon be launched as a plug-in hybrid and as a 100 percent electric car.
The panel that decided the ultimate winner of the World Car of The Year award was comprised of 66 automotive journalists from twenty-three countries; in their announcement of the winner they said that the Volkswagen Golf is as close to a perfect hatchback design as any vehicle that the German carmaker has come up with yet.
The latest generation of the Golf has been updated to offer space, practicality and comfort while being the right size, plus offering a range of new engines and an impressive list of equipment, all of which only compound the fact that it is a fun car to drive, so in the opinion of the jury it’s the car for the everyman, hence the winner.
Now we have to mention that while the Golf won the trophy for overall top honors, the Porsche Boxster/Cayman did get the best of the best for enthusiasts, being awarded the World Performance Car award.
As it might’ve been expected the Tesla Model S took the award for the 2013 World Green Car.
