A new concept hot-hatch from Volkswagen – the Golf R Evo 27kkW – is expected to show off the high-performance powertrain and construction technologies from the German manufacturer at this year’s April Beijing motor show.

The Golf R Evo concept will be powered by a much upgraded version of the production car’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Outputs are expected to rise from the standard 221kW of power and 380Nm of torque to 275kW and 450Nm.

The tuning of the enhanced powerplant has been overseen by Fritz Eichlerh – Volkswagen engine development chief – who is the man behind the 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo in the Mercedes Benz A45, CLA45 and GLA45 AMG trio.

Just like th eregular Mk7 Golf R, power will be sent to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Carbonfibre body panels and a stripped-out interior will cut the concept car’s kerb weight from the standard car’s 1476kg to under 1400kg.

According to reports, the Golf R Evo will be debuting just eleven months after the car maker teased the model with the twin-turbocharged 370kW/560Nm 3.0-litre V-6 powered Volkswagen Golf GTI Design Vision concept.

There are also report that Volkswagen is also prepping a high-performance Polo R pocket rocket, which might debut as early as March’s Geneva motor show.

Now this is specullation, but it is thought that the Polo R will couple a 186kW 2.0-litre turbo with a six-speed DSG and all-wheel drive, thus making for a package capable of reaching 100km/h in less than six seconds.

The current Volkswagen city range is topped by the twin-charged 132kW/250Nm 1.4-litre Polo GTI, which is capable of reaching triple figures in 6.9 seconds.
