The first details of the new Volkswagen Golf R have been released promising that the turbocharged four-wheel drive flagship will be the fastest-accelerating production Golf to date.

The all-new Mark VII Volkswagen Golf R promises 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds from the new 221kW/380Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, and teamed with an optional six-speed dual-clutch transmission.  This will be 0.6 seconds quicker than the current model.

Even the standard manual transmission will be 0.6 second faster than the model it will be replacing.

Apart from the benefits of engine performance, the new model will see reductions in the combined cycle fuel consumption and emissions.

The Mark VII Golf R claims 7.1 litres per 100km for the manual and 6.9L/100km for the automatic, with CO2 rated at 165g/km for the manual and 159g/km for the automatic – these will be up to 18 percent more efficient than its predecessor’s figures.

According to the German company their dynamic chassis controls – DCC – system will be available as an option and also includes a new ‘Race’ mode for the driving profile selector. Electronic stability constrole – ESC – can now also be deactivated for ‘driving on a race track’.

The new Golf R features a new front bumper with large air intakes, a modified radiator grille with an ‘R’ logo, as well as newly developed daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights.

On the back, smoked LED tail-lights join a rear diffuser flanked by dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipes, as opposed to the centrally located twin system of the previous generation.

The interior has not been revealed but it set to feature cloth-centred sports seats with Alcantara bolsters and unique Golf R instrument dials with blue needles.

The official debut of the Mark VII Volkswagen Golf R is expected to come at next month Frankfurt Motor Show which will begin on September 10, before launching in Europe shortly afterwards.
