What we know about the next generation Mustang

Ford Evos

2014 will bring with it the debut of the next-generation Ford Mustang, which has been sporting a very retro look for almost a decade, retro both in design as well as its chassis and the sheer raw power, the Mustang has remained a somewhat modern piece of American history.

We should expect for this approach to continue however the overall execution will have to evolve since the Mustang will want to move into a broader market, possibly a global one.

While the spirit may be the same throwback to a simpler time, this will be a fully modern car, for instance it has been confirmed by the American carmaker that the new Mustang will also carry an Eco-Boost engine under its hood. In the same realm a smaller-displacement, high-output V6 – a trend that we’ve talked about here before – will be more than capable of providing adequate grunt while also improving overall efficiency.

The V6 is rated at 305 hp, but the Mustang will also come with the 662-hp supercharged V8 Shelby GT500, capable of at least 200 mph.

It is also thought that the live rear axle will be dropped in favor of an independent rear suspension, this will add a bit of modern refinement to the sometimes raw feel of the car which tended to easily swing out from the tail.

Now all of those things are quite fine and dandy, however the biggest changes, and the ones expected to bring on the most discussions, will be those made to the exterior design of the car. We have nothing confirmed yet, but various reports have said that Ford will adopt the look of the Evos concept that debuted in Frankfurt in 2011 for the next Mustang. The Evos was used as the basis for the 2013 Fusion, a car that received rather solid reviews thanks to the sleek and curvy sides, the sporty look as well as the prominent grille.

This approach may also be due to the fact that Ford is considering marketing the new Mustang to Europe as well, and in other global markets as well, we’re just going to have to wait and see what actually happens.
