The city was once home to a flourishing Jewish community as well which had its beginnings in the Roman period but which only swelled once the Ottoman Empire started taking in Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal. The community never recovered after the deportations of World War II but two Synagogues still remain and there is a Jewish Museum as well.
