Gyeongbok-gung is the grandest palace from the Joseon Dynasty which was destroyed by Japanese invasions on two separate occasions once in 1592 and a second time in 1910. Since then it has been restored and it now houses the Joseon Palace Museum as well as the Korean Folk Museum in its vast grounds.

Changdeok-gung is actually an older palace, first built in 1405 but it wasn’t used for a long time, it was however the seat of power between 1618 and 1896 and has been restored to its initial color scheme. Notable buildings are the blue-roofed Seonjeongjeon which was the King’s office and the Daejojeon or Great Making Hall which was his bedchamber. This palace also contains the famous Huwon or Secret Garden.
