Asheville is rather well known around the United States for its very unique architecture, particularly its downtown area and the buildings around the Biltmore Estate. The city got hit hard by the Great Depression and this meant that very little development happened in the following decades. Normally this would’ve been a problem however this meant that the Art Deco architecture of the Roaring 20′s was largely saved from demolition, and now Asheville features the most complete collection of Art Deco buildings in the States.
The Biltmore Estate is actually a French Renaissance-inspired chateau, featuring more than 250 rooms, it is the largest single family home in the States and the largest privately-owned house in the world. It has some fabulous gardens on its grounds, stables, huge hiking trails and a winery.
The City Hall Building was designed by Art Deco architect Douglas Ellington and construction finished in 1927. it was made out of Georgia Pink marble, brick and terra cotta with a steeped, octagonal roof which is the city’s logo.
The Grove Arcade is a very elaborate Tudoresque building which occupies an entire city block. Each of its four sides feature giant arches which allow entrance to the building. The main side entrance features two massive gryphons acting as guards to the entrance and the interior is very expansive, with oak shopfronts, spiral staircases and simply opulence all over the place.
