Being one of the larger towns in the colonies, Salem was the sixth-largest city in the United States back in 1790 and was the richest per capita due to extensive maritime commerce. This means that the funds were there to create a series of wonderful buildings and as the status of the city declined, those wonderful post-medieval, Georgian, Federal, Greek-Revival and Victorian architecture masterpieces continued to survive.
