Bicycle to car communication system in the works

vehicle-to-vehicle

We like to talk about safety technologies for and related to the automotive industry, and today’s news comes from Queensland University of Technology – QUT – where a team of researchers has been working on a system that will allow for communication between cyclics and drivers that are about to collide with each other.

The technology will be using smartphones as well as other devices to make cars and bikes communicate.

More details about the system will be given when they innaugurate their work at the Queensland Injury Prevention Network – QIPN – event next week.

Doctor Sebastien Demmel – who works for the QUT Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – said that they’re working on a smart device app capable of locating, tracking, connecting and then communicating between devices to warn both rider and driver about any reasonable chance of a collision.

The idea came from the fact that most smart devices have a combination of GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth systems – if not all – which allow them to share a lot of information, so they should be able communicate between road users. For instance, if a cyclist and driver are approaching an intersection at speed and if the app predicts impending danger, it will warn both of them to slow down.

About 35 cyclists die on Australian roads each year and 2500 are seriously injured with the majority of those happening as a result of bike versus vehicle accidents. The aim of this technology is to try to reduce those numbers.

According to their research, most of the collisions between cyclists and motor vehicles occur because of human error, or one not seeing the other, so the idea of this technology would be to prevent injury and improve cyclists safety on the road.

We’ve been talking about lots of vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems that various car makers are working on so this idea doesn’t seem far fetched. The system has not yet been tested though, it’s not yet known if the app alert could distract cyclist just moments before what could be an impending accident which in turn could make things worse.
