General Motors has now recalled more than twenty million vehicles across North America, a process that starte at the beginning of 2014, 17.8 million of which being in the United States alone.

Very recently they’ve announced a further six separate recall campaigns onf a massive range of models sold almost entirely in the US, Canada and Mexico, bringing the total number of recall campaigns to a whopping 44 since the 13th of January this year.

The largest most recent recall has involved under 3.4 million vehicles due to a potential ignition switch fault that could in turn see the car slip out of the ‘run’ position over bumpy roads if the driver’s keychain is too heavy.

In case this would happen, then the car’s brakes and steering are compromised and the sensor that deploys the airbags could fail in the event of a crash.

Besides this reasoning, GM has also recalled 193,580 more vehicles in five separate actions involving the shift cable, steering pump clamp, airbags and floor mats.

This latest mass recall has brought up the running total of North American vehicles recall, this year including exports, to 20.03 million, and recall-related repair bill for a second quarter of this year has been increased to somewhere about US$ 700 million.

The 3.4 million-vehicle ignition recall is affecting the Buick Lacrosse, Lucerne and Regal, the Chevrolet Impala and monte Carlo and the Cadillac Deville and DTS.

The largest recall also follows a review of ignition issues following the recall in February of 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalt and some other small cars, which has been linked to at least thirteen deaths.

GM CEO Mary Barra is scheduled to return to Washington D.C. For a second hearing before a US House panel, investigating the Cobalt recall.

GM received the findings of an investigation by former US Attorney Anton Valukas into the Cobalt ignition switch recall, and the company said that it plans to act on all of its recommendations.
