New information about the hybrid Jaguar supercar

C-X75 Jaguar

The vehicle model known as the Jaguar C-X75 is being developed to be a hybrid supercar, and recently a few more details about it have surfaced.

It would appear that the C-X75 will be powered by a bespoke, Jaguar-built, 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine which will work in conjunction with an electric motor co-developed with none other than the Williams Formula One team, but that is not all. It appears that this electric motor will be aided by a second electric motor so that in total the electric motors will output over 368kW.

The small-capacity petrol engine will be outfitted with both turbocharging and supercharging, and to make sure they’ll also throw in direct and port-fed fuel injection. The direct injection is meant to work in the low-to-mid rev range, and will focus on fuel efficiency, while the port-fed system is meant to boost up the amount of fuel at higher revs – this is not yet known as a fact but it is said that the car can reach ten thousand rpm.

Each wheel will be independently powered and this system will be supported by a transverse seven-speed automated manual transmission, because a dual-clutch gearbox would’ve been too heavy and rather large.

How the vehicle manages only 99 grams per kilometer of CO2 is by powering the front wheels exclusively with one of the electric motors, while the rear wheels are driven by the hybrid powerplant, even though electric-only is possible.

Those who have been aware of the concept that was shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show will notice a stark lack of mentions related to jet turbine generators, which have been completely eliminated from the design, however when it comes to the bonded carbon chassis, carbon rear subframe and mostly carbon body panels, they’re still there, still making this Jaguar’s first ‘carbon car’.

The final production date should be announced sometime in early 2013, and production will be limited to 200 units.
