Visiting Alaska – A place of wonderful wilderness

The state of Alaska occupies quite a large area, about 586,000 square miles, and the large majority of that surface area is dominated by raw, cold wilderness. With this in mind, there is still a rather big chunk of the state that is available to tourists all year-round with numerous activities meant to cater to a wide variety of interests.
On the whole however, Alaska is a great destination for those who want to view and explore nature at its magnificent best, a place where oceans and mountains are separated by vast shorelines, and landscapes made up of glaciers, lakes and mountains defy description by our limited vocabulary. Alaska features pretty much every major geographical feature possible, ranging from forests and mountains, to rivers and of course wildlife.
One of the best known features of Alaska, and to many a very representative feature, is Mount Kinley, the highest mountain in North America. The state of Alaska is very conscious about its natural beauty and as such there are fifteen national parks that you can visit at various times of year. All of them can be accessed during the rather short summer season, but some will be rather hard to reach during the winter. Regardless of this, all of them are abundant with wildlife, so your chances of seeing creatures such as the wild bison or even a polar bear in their natural habitat are rather high.
As far as activities go, there is no limit to what you can do in Alaska, known for offering great hiking opportunities, the region is a big magnet for those who enjoy rafting or kayaking, not to mention fishing which is an extremely popular sport in the state, whether it’s the salt water variety or the fresh water one, you’ll find it here.
The state has also done its best to preserve the culture of its native tribes, there are four tribes each of them having their own, rich cultural background, something that many visitors to Alaska are interested in finding more about.
