The city is located at the center of the Tatar culture and is in fact the capital of the republic of Tatarstan. It is an important economic and cultural center of the region and it has a very rich history.

Getting into the city might prove to be a bit difficult because while it is served by an airport, it mainly works with local flights within Russia, it is however much easier to get to by train and even by boat, once there though you can employ our Kazan car rental services in order to better explore the place.

The city has been constantly growing in the past couple of years with many new residential buildings and offices sprouting up as well as sport venues, the city will actually be the host of the Universiade 2013, when you add to all of that a thousand years of history and a blend of civilizations and cultures the place is a great tourist destination.

Back in 2005 the city celebrated its 1000-year anniversary and this meant that it received some major reconstruction and restoration and this means that you’ll see the place in a somewhat fresh light.

One of the attractions of the city is the Kazan Kremlin which used to be a Tatar fortress in centuries past, it was almost completely destroyed by Ivan the Terrible but eventually it got rebuilt by the Russians with influences from the Kremlin architecture such as the parapets and watchtowers.

The Kremlin itself contains several separate attractions which you won’t want to miss, such as the Suyumbike Tower, the Kul-Sharif Mosque and the Annunciation Cathedral as well as a couple of museums.

The Suyumbike Tower is shrouded in the legend of the Tatar Princess Suyumbike who was betrothed to Ivan the Terrible but only consented to marrying him if he were to build the highest tower in the city in seven days. The Russian ruler did it but instead of being subjugated by him she chose to instead leap off the top of the tower, all of this is a legend of course and almost nobody believes it but it does offer the building a strange romantic aura.

The Kul-Sharif Mosque is also located within the Kremlin’s walls and is actually a new building, having been finished in 2005 after a decade of construction. The mosque is very similar to modern Turkish designs with a dome shaped as a lotus flower featuring many windows which creates a very airy atmosphere inside.

These are only a few of the things that you can see in Kazan and these are only in one place so make sure to employ our Kazan car hire services in order to see more of the place and its surroundings.
