Toyota has unveiled a new concept display at the Tokyo motor show and they call it Smart Mobility City and is meant to provide a glimpse into the brand’s future plans for connected mobility and safety.

The Smart Mobility City concept was designed to showcase the key areas Toyota believes to be essential to the development of its Smart Mobility future, with the display focusing on next-gen urban traffic systems, cooperative intelligent transport systems as well as next-generation telematics.

The display will showcase the two-seat T-COM, upright-ridden Winglet and the three-wheel Toyota i-Road – which debuted in Geneva and has since actually been confirmed for production. Toyota’s plan for their next-generation urban traffic systems revolves around its Ha:mo transport concept.

It’s been undergoing testing in Japan since last year, the Ha:mo is aimed to offer flexible transportation via the blending of personal mobility vehicles and public transport.

The i-Road will be introduced for Ha:mo starting with early 2014 with the T-COM to take part in the trial from the middle of December.

The company’s cooperative intelligent transport system aims to eliminate traffic injuries and fatalities by combining automated driving and driver support technologies so as to allow vehicles to communicate with the surrounding infrastructure, pedestrians and of course with other vehicles.

For this key area, the display includes a vehicle-to-infrastructure cooperative driving simulator, which Toyota built to demonstrate environmentally friendly driving support systems. The simulator will show how road-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle communication can be used to decrease the risk of traffic accidents.

The Smart Mobility City display will be completed by next-generation telematics and will include a traffic information gathering system, voice recognition software as well as a smartphone-based navigation service.

Toyota plans to further develop a cloud-based voice-operated service that will enable users to search for and then set destinations in a very intuitive manner.
