Bratislava has been settled for more than two thousand years with the oldest settlement in the area belonging to the Celtic culture with the Romans then taking over that entire region of Europe in the second and third centuries AD. As the centuries unfolded the town of Bratislava started to appear being run by a series of various cultures ranging from the medieval Hungarian empire, to the Turks, then to the Austro-Hungarian empire and then to the Soviets in the twentieth century.

All of this succession of influences have each in turn left their mark on the city and obviously on its culture so that nowadays the town is a mix of Soviet era gray apartment buildings with historic palaces, cathedrals, churches and medieval bridges which managed to survive the ravages of time.

Many visitors to the city are taken aback when they realize the small dimensions of it, especially when you consider that it is the capital of the country but despite this it is the largest city in Slovakia, however regardless of this it packs a lot of things to see and do despite its dimensions.

For instance you can take a stroll through the town’s historic center and due to the town’s size this is one of the smallest historic centers that you will ever see however this only means that the charm is much more concentrated.

Of course you can’t go to Bratislava and not see the caste. The Bratislava castle is perched on top of a hill overlooking the town and the views from its ramparts are great but there’s another monument which offers some great views on a neighboring hill right behind the castle there’s a monument in memory of Soviet casualties and it’s the highest place in the city and also some consider it to be a very romantic place although it can be rather windy.
