Ford EcoBoost street-legal race car shows great performance

Formula Ford road-legal race car

We’ve talked about the award winning 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine from Ford before, and now it’s back in automotive news because it powered a road-legal Formula Ford race car to the 11th fastest lap around the Nurburgring.

Now while that just puts it outside the top ten, you have to understand that this is quite the achievement considering the size of the engine and is a great testament to the technology that makes it up, as well as of course, that of the car itself. The car is after all a race car, but still one has to consider even here that it is a road-legal race car, which you can’t find that easily.

The car was able to go from zero to 100km/h in under four seconds, and the unofficial top speed it set is around 255.5 km/h. Now those speeds are nothing new for the racetrack, however the fuel economy from the engine is: Ford claims that at 56 km/h the engine ate up 2.4 L/100km which increased to 5.0 L/100km at 120 km/h.

Now those are some incredible numbers right there, but they are made even more-so when you consider that the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine replaced the earlier Ford Formula standard 1.6-litre EcoBoost.

Also in order for the car to be road-legal several additions were made to its design such as adding wheel covers, front and rear lights with indicators, as well as wing mirrors and of course, a horn. But none of those may have not made as much of a difference as the road-legal tyres and the six-speed manual transmission have.

Now even though this race car is street-legal you shouldn’t expect the same type of performances from your future Ford Focus. The European Ford Focus will offer two versions of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, a 74kW option which claims to use up 4.8 L/100km and a 92kW version which delivers 5.0L/100km.
