Mercedes-Benz claims to have solved carsickness

Mercedes-Benz S-Class-Coupe

The all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe was launched in Italy and they’re claiming a world-first feature for a production vehicle, dubbed Active Curve Tilting.

The Coupe shares the platform with the S-Class, however it uses an adaptive suspension system called Magic Body Control, which uses a camera to view the road ahead in order to improve ride comfort.

The Coupe builds up on this system and adds a ‘curve tilting’ function, which will lean the car into the bend, just like a motorcyclist or skier would.

According to Mercedes this feature isn’t meant to enhance high-speed cornerig but instead it is going to improve passenger comfort on twisty roads.

The system works by reducing lateral forces which act on passengers and such allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuaously in fractions of a second on bends – this will be depending on the road angle and vehicle speed.

This function will be available between 15 and 180km/h and can be switched on or off just like you would select from the three drive modes – Curve, comfort, Sport – using the ABC switch on the centre console.

According to the Mercedes-Benz project leader – Magnus Rau – by reducing the lateral forces throughout the entire corner, passengers will be sitting more firlmy, without needing to prop oneself up and as a result there is less stress on the body.

So far the active tilting function will only be available on the S-Class Coupe, although Rau did say that the technology could be applied to all Mercedes-Benz vehicles that feature the active suspension – includign S-Class and SL-Class mdoels.
